AI on WhatsApp Business challenges automated customer service

Automation grows, but consumers still want context

With the rise of AI agents in messaging channels, companies operating via WhatsApp Business seek to balance scale, context, and human presence to preserve consumer trust in automated support.

The adoption of artificial intelligence expands the ability to respond to and organize requests. At the same time, consumers show fatigue with overly robotic digital experiences.

A survey by WordPress VIP, cited in a report published by TechRadar in 2026, found that 74% of respondents considered the internet to have become less human in the previous decade, a perception the study associated with the rise of automation and AI. The survey also addressed fatigue caused by prolonged interactions with automated systems.

The data do not mean rejection of all automation. They reinforce that responses without context, repetition and lack of a human fallback can harm the experience, even when the system replies quickly.

The role of AI in WhatsApp Business

WhatsApp Business has taken on a broader role in the relationship between companies and consumers. Depending on the process, the channel can support support, lead qualification, commercial inquiries and journey follow-up.

The expansion also involves proprietary products from major platforms. According to a report by TechRadar published in June 2026, Meta launched Meta Business Agent to act as the first contact point for small and medium businesses, with examples such as replies, recommendations and scheduling. These features were attributed to Meta's product and should not be treated as universal capabilities of any enterprise agent.

On other platforms, what AI can answer or do depends on the scope, sources and configured integrations. The agent does not automatically know catalog, policies, customers or orders. A knowledge base with approved sources helps provide context, but requires updates, testing and owners.

The Whatsplaid AI agent for WhatsApp Business is aimed at business operations and must be configured with the company's own knowledge, limits and escalation criteria. It is distinct from features offered directly by Meta or other organizations.

When the human team needs to take over

The challenge is not only to respond quickly. The operation must recognize situations where automation lacks sufficient source, confidence or authorization to continue.

"Automation on WhatsApp needs to consider context, intent and human handoff in sensitive situations," says Eduardo Thomas, director of Whatsplaid. According to him, automated agents can assist recurring questions, status updates, triage and objective answers when there are adequate sources and configurations. Complaints, conflicts and sensitive decisions require greater oversight.

The team should also take over when information is missing, confidence is low, the customer explicitly asks for a person, or an integration is unavailable. In an inbox for human support on WhatsApp, the history and reason for the handoff help the agent continue without requiring the customer to repeat all the context.

The handoff must pause the agent, assign an owner and define when automation can be resumed. Without these rules, bot and agent can respond at the same time or leave the conversation without an owner.

Trust depends on transparency and oversight

The discussion also involves privacy and clarity about who receives each message. In an interview published by Le Monde in June 2025, WhatsApp director Will Cathcart stated that Meta AI accessed messages sent directly to the tool, and not the user’s other private conversations. The statement refers to Meta AI and does not, by extension, prove how other products handle data.

Companies using agents on WhatsApp Business must explain purposes when applicable, limit data and access, and maintain oversight of knowledge, integrations, and logs. They should also make it clear when a conversation is automated and how to request human support.

AI progress on the channel does not guarantee a better experience or commercial outcome. Trust depends on the ability to automate without removing context, transparency, and human accountability.
